Hand baggage allowance
British Airways have generous free hand baggage allowances with children (except infants under two) and adults allowed two bags each. See below for more specific details.
All passengers travelling with BA are allowed to take two items of hand luggage on-board. The maximum weight per bag is 23kg (51lb) and you must be able to lift the bags into the overhead lockers without assistance.
The handbag/laptop bag, marked with a yellow tag, slots under the seat in front of you (except in First or Club World) and your additional cabin bag goes into the overhead locker.
All flights with BA allow for two items of hand luggage. The first, a handbag/laptop bag marked with a yellow tag after check in, can be up to 40cm x 30cm x 15cm (16in x 12in x 6in) and the second to be stored in the overhead locker up to 56cm x 45cm x 25cm (22in x 18in x 10in).
For flights to and from Brazil the size varies slightly with your first bag allowance expanding to 45cm x 36cm x 20cm (18in x 14in x 8in).
Hand baggage only (Basic) tickets are available on all direct British Airways short haul flights.
Checking in excess hand baggage
If either bag is over the size or weight limit, or you have more than two bags, it/they will need to be checked in and will count towards your checked baggage allowance. As a result any further baggage you check into the hold must be paid for as extra baggage. If you are travelling on a hand baggage only ticket, you will be charged for a fee at the airport rate.
It’s worth noting that you must be able to fit your bags into the baggage gauge at check in, including handles, pockets and wheels and that all duty free and airport purchases must also fit in the allowed baggage.
Number of bags permitted
The amount of checked baggage each BA customer is allowed to take on-board their flight depends on their booking and encompasses the route, fare and ticket. The best way to check how many bags you’re allowed is to log into Manage My Booking where your personal allowance will be allocated. However most journeys allow for two bags.
Size restrictions (per bag)
A bag checked into a BA flight can be up to 90cm x 75cm x 43cm (35.5in x 29.5in x 16in) in size. This must include bits that stick out, such as the handle, pockets and wheels.
Weight restrictions (per bag)
Each individual piece of luggage has a weight allowance of 23kg (32kg for Brazil). Any bag over 32kg (70lb) will be shipped separately as cargo.
Charges for checked bags (again these may vary depending on time & point of purchase)
Each passenger is allowed up to ten pieces of luggage weighing 23 or 32kg (51–70lb) per flight. This includes the checked luggage allowance. When checked in online BA charges between £36 to £120 per piece of luggage over the allowance. At the airport these fees rise to between £40 and £140.
Any charge/restriction variation by destination or season
Flights to/from Brazil, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and connecting journeys between India and USA/Bermuda/Canada have particular restrictions on baggage. First Class travellers are allowed three bags at 32kg each.
Excess baggage charges for BA apply to luggage weighing between 23-32kg (51-70lb). Each bag costs £65/$100/€75. Bags over 32kg must be shipped separately as cargo.
Outsize or unusual baggage
Larger items such as musical instruments and sporting equipment of up to 190cm x 75cm x 65cm (75in x 29.5in x 25.5in) can be carried for an additional over-sized bag charge. As of 2016, BA waives this charge. Any items larger than 190cm x 75cm x 65cm (75in x 29.5in x 25.5in) require separate shipping.
